PLASTIC LEECHING

How does our biodegradable plastic technology work?

These biodegradable products are made by combining traditional plastic with an organic additive at the manufacturing stage. In landfill, the technology works by attracting microbes to the bottle where the item is then recognised as a natural food source for these micro-organisms to digest. As they digest these items, they secrete an enzyme that breaks down the carbon bonds within the plastic molecules which in turn biodegrades the item completely. This process is called depolymerisation. As this process reaches its final stages, all that is left is a natural fertiliser once the bottle has been completely biodegraded into the soil and therefore working in perfect symbiosis with the environment at the end of its life. This process leaves behind no microplastics or toxic residue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bio-Methane Potential - BMP

BMP provides rapid indication of how much biogas (methane) a material has the potential to produce in an anaerobic environment. This test determines if a material is able to be converted into biogas within an environment with NO (or limited) oxygen and limited light. The test is used internationally by governments, universities, and researchers to determine the methane potential of a material in landfills.

We test our 100% biodegradable plastics with a BMP testing method by an independent laboratory and over the longer term to ensure they meet standards ASTM D5511, ASTM D5526 and ASTM D5988.

This test was conducted for a period of 410 days in an independent laboratory in accordance with ASTM D5988.

The test is considered a true landfill test. It provides a realistic representation of biodegradation should a material be disposed of in an environment where it will be exposed to moisture, oxygen, light and soil. The results showed 68% biodegradation of the sample over a 13 month testing period.

After 64 days 3.5% biodegradation was shown in this test.

We can get fast results in an anaerobic environment. This test is used to validate if a material can convert to methane (biogas) in high heat, high moisture, no light, and limited oxygen environments by replicating the environment found in an anaerobic digester or landfill bioreactor.

This test provides realistic results of how fast a material could convert biogas (methane) in the conditions found in municipal landfills. This is a long term test that replicates a landfll environment of low heat, high pressure, limited oxygen, no light and low moisture. Results are typically much slower than those of the ASTM D5511, but also more accurate to landfill performance.

This technology uses an organic additive, which is:

An organic food source.
Approved by USFDA for food contact.
Mixed in a small ratio that does not affect the parent plastic material properties.
The only biodegradable plastic bottle in Australia and NZ today.
